In response to the recent fire outbreak at the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has taken proactive measures to address the challenges associated with relocating international airlines to the new terminal.
A statement released by Oluseyi Odutayo, Head of Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, provided details on this initiative.
The newly formed task force, led by Engineer Hassan Musa, has been assigned the critical task of ensuring a seamless transition for international airlines to the new terminal.
Other members of the task force include Adebayo Oladipo, General Manager, Aerodrome at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), as well as Special Assistants to the Minister, Mr. Collins Mukoro, Mrs. Uyoyou Edhekpo, and Mr. Henry Agbebire.
The statement emphasized that Minister Keyamo had originally set a deadline of October 1, 2023, for the relocation during his inspection of Lagos Airport on August 31, 2023.
However, due to the recent fire incident that raised safety concerns and disrupted passenger movements, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had to expedite the implementation of this directive.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by these changes, the ministry urged passengers and all stakeholders to exercise patience and understanding, as efforts were underway to swiftly resolve the situation. The task force has been assigned the following primary objectives:
- Resolving Passenger Concerns: The task force will address all concerns raised by passengers related to congestion, discomfort, and other issues resulting from the terminal relocation. The ministry is committed to ensuring that every passenger’s feedback is heard and promptly addressed.
- Minimizing Discomfort: Efforts will be focused on minimizing any discomfort during the transition period. This includes streamlining processes at both terminals, providing enhanced signage, dedicated support staff, and improved communication channels, all while closely monitoring operations around the clock.
- Effective Public Communication: The ministry pledged to maintain transparency throughout the relocation process by regularly updating the public on progress made in addressing concerns arising from airline relocations. FAAN plans to enhance its public relations strategies through various platforms, including online channels and customer service helplines.
In conclusion, Minister Keyamo expressed his sincere regrets over the inconvenience caused and reassured all travelers that the government was fully committed to promptly resolving these concerns. The ministry’s commitment remains focused on passenger comfort, safety, and overall satisfaction during this transitional period.
