It was mild drama yesterday as the Kwara Annex of the National Association of Nigeria Students holds her annual convention to usher in new executives to pilot the affairs of the union for next one year.
The election which THE INFORMANT247 ealier reported to have been postponed due to security advises was eventually fixed to hold yesterday at the NLC Hall.
The Labour house, filled with 22 senators and observers from various tertiary institutions in the state, was calm until few hours to the start of the convention when the Special Adviser to the Kwara Governor on student affairs, Mr. Lamidi Akanbi came to the convention ground instructing the students to postpone the convention on security reasons, but was vehemetly rejected by senators and student observers.
However, inside sources revealed that the reason behind the postponement was to allow enough time for the government preferred candidate to emerge after all efforts to lure the senators to their side at the convention ground fails.
The source continued, “They were not prepared for the election but when they discovered that they were not having senators to vote for their candidate, they came with money to lure the senators but was rejected. They wanted the election postpone so as to give their candidate enough time to buy the senators, if actually it was for security reasons, it should be from the police not S.A student.”
The S.A. however noted that the postponement was due to the several security observations sent to his table ahead of the convention.
After several deliberation, the convention was later agreed to hold amidst tight security.
Comr. Habeeb Omotosho (Tallest), a former NANS Kwara Chairman and Comr. Reliable, the former Students Union president, Offa Polytechnic were nominated for the convention chairman which Comr. Tallest eventually emerge.
Also present during the convention are Special Adviser to the executive Governor of Kwara state on commerce, Comr. Lawal Olalekan (Auto), Comr. Abdulhameed Adangba, Comr Saddam, Comr. Abdulganiyu Erubu, Comr Elder, Comr. Gani Balogun, Comr. Ibrahim Abdurazak (Jeje), Comr. Salihu Shola Taofeek, Comr. Ajadi Muyideen, Comr. Imam Adekunle and two national NANS presidential aspirant; Comr. Odunjo Adio (Orlando) and Comr. Lukman Inspector among others.
Comr. Adebayo Saheed Olosasa of the University of Ilorin eventually emerges as the chairman with 15 votes in the keenly contested election.
Speaking after the convention, the outgoing chairman expressed his appreciation to the senators and security officer for the peaceful conduct of the convention.
