Fee hike: Unilorin students set to go on protest
Students Union describes hike as “April fool’
Indications emerged that University of Ilorin students may embark on a peaceful protest on Tuesday, November 6th, 2018 over hike in school charges. The Informant247 authoratively reports.
It was gathered that the students who are angered by the outrageous hike in school fees decided to express their grievances by taking to the street.
Some of the major initiators of the protest, who spoke with our correspondent, under the condition of anonymity said the protest will be coming up on Tuesday if the school management fails to reach an agreement with the student Union on Monday.
However, while reacting to fee hike, the student Union described it as outrageous saying it’s nothing but April fool.
“In simple term, I consider it as April fool and the University authority should be commended for millennium joke. We shall resist this to get reasonable concession.”
They further instructed students to pend any payment till further notice, “Hence, no students should pay! We shall call for meeting with the management for intellectual discourse.”
Speaking with one of the campus journalist, NAIJARIB, he said “We know the economic situation of the country that some people actually have to send themselves to school and all hands are not equal”
“The plan earlier agreed to was to increase the fee by 25%, but now it was increased to 120%. The student now are clamouring that they should first remove all payments, all payments should be removed for now.”
When contacted for comments, the student Union president, Mr. Seyi Animashahun denied the protest saying they are applying a more diplomatic way.
“We actually have to make due and proper consultation concerning what has happened, we have written a petition to the management signed by all faculty presidents, executivea and Senate principal officers of the student Union. What we intended to do is to make our demands that the hike in school fees be reversed pending when we have a very detailed dialogue with the management”
“So all we are doing is in a very diplomatic way. We are not planning any protest, before that there must be a failed dialogue and we have not even have a dialogue. So the protest are not coming from us, it is probably coming from distractirs who wants to hijack this school fees issue”
