Information has emerged on the recent arrest of some student leaders by the security operatives in the state.
The student were said to be arrested in connection with a protest held today at the Kwara state internal revenue service headquarters.
During the protest, the student, who were alledged to be from Kwara state polytechnics, chants solidarity songs and barricading the front gates with a vehicle. They claimed to be protesting over the non-payment of bursary.
The student were dispersed and their vehicle trolled to the police headquarters were some student leaders have already been arrested.
Although, the national headquarters of the association has not yet made an official statement on this, but unconfirmed information revealed that they are out of the knowledge of the protest. According to a top source in the association, who pleased anonymity said, the student went on protest out of their will.
“It was when it got to the attention of the national headquarters that we need to visit the arrested students and secure their release. Even though we weren’t informed, they went out of their own will, but we must not leave them to their fate.”
“When we got to the headquarters, they beg on their behalf but they insist on charging the arrested students to court.”
However, speaking on this incidence, the SSA media to the governor, Dr. Femi Akorede said, “Gov Ahmed has nothing to do with the reported arrest.”
“The govt never claimed to have paid the N20m approved last week which will be paid as soon as salaries are cleared.”
After hours of detention, with the intervention of the national headquarters, the student were released on the instructions of the KW-IRS chairman, who according to sources ordered the arrest.
It will be recalled that the student has been clamouring for the release of the approved 50 million naira which led to the barricading of some parastatas by the association on Friday. The government almost immediately released a statement that the money has been released.
“The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has approved the release of an additional N20m for the payment of student bursary.”
“News of the approval was conveyed via a statement issued on Friday by the Chairman of the Kwara State Scholarship Board, Barrister Fatima Yusuf.”
“Barrister Yusuf commended the leadership and membership of the student body for their maturity and urged them to exercise patience while the payment is processed.”
About 7:22pm, the chairperson, scholarship board confirmed the receipt or the money which was said to have been credited earlier today.
