A Pro-democracy group in Kwara state, Kwara Must Change has called on the Kwara State government and state House of Assembly to investigate discrepancies in salaries being paid to State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) workers.
In a statement issued by the state coordinator of Kwara Must Change, Comrade Yusuf Olatunji, the group said that the change of government has exposed certain irregularities in salaries of SUBEB workers, which requires proper investigation to unravel the mystery.
According to Comrade Yusuf, June salary paid to workers by Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led administration saw many workers receiving more salaries than they are used to.
Comrade Yusuf explained that for example, investigation amongst subeb workers shows that prior to this new administration, level 10 workers receives between N39,000 to N39,900 depending on their step. However, the June salary paid by the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led government saw level 10 workers receiving N43,520, with a little over N4000 increase from their previous salaries.
One of the workers who spoke to Kwara Must Change stated that, my salary till may 2019 was 39,400 but this June, I received 43,520 and this shows that somebody within the system might have been deliberately cutting parts of my salary all these years.
Another worker told Kwara Must Change that there’s much to investigate in this salary saga. According to her, while some of her level 10 colleagues received over N43,000 this June, she still received her previous salary of N39,400, raising more questions than answers.
The Kwara Must Change coordinator added that, “While some level 10 workers still received their previous M39,000 salary, there are numerous other level 9 workers, who received higher salaries, ranging from N40,000 to N42,000”, it said
Additionally, Kwara Must Change maintained that, the discrepancies in salaries among workers has created confusion, which the Kwara State government must investigate and resolve.
“Specifically, government must investigate why workers of the same level in the same sector earn different salaries, why workers in lower level earn more money than some in higher level and investigate if workers earning lower wages are being short changed all along and by who”
The group concluded that, should it be discovered that workers are being delibrately short changed, all those involved should be named, sanctioned and brought to book, while restoring the full salaries of the affected workers.
